Using Vivitrol® (Naltrexone) for Opiate Relapse Prevention
Vivitrol® is an extended-release injectable form of naltrexone that works by blocking the effects of opioids for up to one month at a time. This medication helps reduce cravings during the critical early stages of recovery, when the risk of relapse is often highest. Because Vivitrol® is non-addictive and not a controlled substance, it offers an effective option for individuals seeking relapse prevention without replacement therapy.
At JC Recovery Center, Vivitrol® is used as part of a broader treatment strategy that includes counseling, therapy, and structured support to ensure each client is set up for lasting success.
When Vivitrol® May Be an Appropriate Option
Vivitrol® is often recommended for individuals who have completed detox and are committed to maintaining sobriety but want additional support against cravings. It has gained broad acceptance within both clinical and criminal justice settings as a relapse-prevention tool for opioid dependence, particularly for those who prefer an alternative to opioid-agonist therapies such as methadone or buprenorphine.
Before beginning treatment, clients must be opioid-free for 7 to 10 days. During this time, JC Recovery Center provides a safe, structured environment and one-on-one therapeutic support to ensure each individual fully understands the benefits, considerations, and expectations of Vivitrol® treatment.
